A Lasting Legacy

A Lasting Legacy

Congratulations to local historian and longstanding member of OBHAG Jessie Hanson on the publication of her latest book Eleanor Harris and her Charity Schools in Baschurch Parish: A Lasting Legacy.

Baschurch School in North Shropshire was founded by local lady, Eleanor Harris, at the beginning of the eighteenth century to teach the poor children of the parish. Born at Boreatton Hall, Eleanor grew up in Baschurch during the turbulent times of the English Civil War and spent many of her formative years in this rural parish before moving to London.

Yet, in her will, she remembered the poor children of the parish by setting up a Trust to provide both schooling and clothing.

Jessie’s book begins with John Harris, who in the late sixteenth century sent his son Roger to Shrewsbury School so starting the family’s rise to prominence, and traces the history of his descendant Eleanor’s enterprise right through to the late 1900s. The book includes memories of Jessie’s own happy school days, with many photographs.

Published by Peele Publishing at £4.99. Copies available at Booka, Oswestry.
